I am Dick Moore and I am the Mayor of this wonderful City. Obviously, I am very proud of what we have to offer and I am inviting you to take a closer look at us. You will find Elkhart is a great place to live, work, and play. You will discover that we have a very capable work force and unbelievable customer base. We have much to offer. My staff and I are ready to work with you in locating your business to Elkhart. If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Elkhart is a vibrant city with nearly 52,000 residents living in some 16,000 residential units. We are located in North-Central Indiana, approximately one hundred nine (109) miles from Chicago, one hundred thirty-four (134) miles from Indianapolis and two hundred three miles (203) from Detroit. We are located near four federal highways and six state highways, and we are minutes away from the Elkhart Municipal Airport and the South Bend Regional Airport, connecting us to all parts of the world. Elkhart's business community encompasses a variety of industries such as manufactured housing, recreational vehicles, musical instruments and pharmaceuticals. Because of our strong manufacturing base, approximately 15,000 people from surrounding communities travel to Elkhart to work.
In addition, Elkhart has some fantastic public amenities. We have a state-of the-art ice rink, a water park, and newly renovated swimming pool. We also have our own beach and public golf course. All of these amenities make our community a great place to live.
Our City owned 85 year old Performing Arts Theatre is undergoing a complete $18 million dollar restoration. Our police force consists of 120 full time officers and a small reserve unit. The Fire Department consists of 120 full time fire fighters working in 6 district stations and one central location. We have two sister cities, one in England and one in Bulgaria. We exist on the main street of the Midwest the Indiana Toll Road and our exit is among the busiest on the system. We are within driving distance to access the Atlantic Ocean via our Indiana Harbor and 5 hours to the south is the Ohio River the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico. Universities in our City and the area include the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University South Bend/Elkhart, Goshen and Bethel College. We have bus service to Chicago O'Hare and the Chicago Midway Airports as well. We have the largest rail yard east of the Mississippi connecting to every major line in the country, and we are a City of diverse industry. The greater Elkhart area population is about 80,000. To provide the services, maintain the transportation system and infrastructure and all properties owned by the people the City employs nearly 600. We are therefore a great benefit to the local economy. We are something to be proud of.
Sincerely,
Dick Moore
Mayor

LERNER THEATRE
The New Lerner Theatre will put the heart back in Elkhart. The former Elco Theater will be completely renovated to add 6,000 square feet of meeting space, state of the art video and audio capabilities, an enlarged stage area, and other improvements to make it a first-class performing arts center. Design of The Lerner Theatre allows adaptability for various uses. Some of the features will include:
- Seating for more than 1700
- A movable stage that will allow a larger surface area in the up position and, when not needed, will allow additional seating in the down position
- A state of the art video/audio system that will allow televised sporting events like Notre Dame football games and IU basketball games on a 50-foot screen as well as afford the opportunity to have interactive television with anyone anyplace in the world
- A colonnade along Franklin Street which will provide shelter for those standing in line to attend events or purchase tickets
- Connections to the Chamber of Commerce building to permit joint use of The Lerner Theatre and the Chamber building for shows and other activities
- Cooperative programming with the IUSB Elkhart facility
Construction began in early 2009 and will be completed in 18 to 24 months. Existing space will be renovated, and new construction to the north of the existing theater will add flexible space that can be used for wedding receptions, small theater productions, proms, and meetings. A catering kitchen, elevators, and expanded lobby area will be features of the new facility.
Major funding is already in place with a $10.5M City bond issue which does not increase taxes. Private funding is also being sought. Tax deductible donations may be made through the Elkhart County Community Foundation. Your gift will provide a lasting impact on the Elkhart community and will be a gift to your children and grandchildren for generations to come.
The steering committee responsible for this project is co-chaired by Jack Cittadine, Art Decio, and Bob Deputy. Other members include John Dille, III, Tom Dusthimer, Alice Martin, Frank Martin, Rex Martin, George Thomas, Scott Welch, and Jeff Wells.
