Wellhead Protection Plan
In 1989, the State of Indiana adopted the Ground Water Protection Act authorizing the Water Pollution Control Board to establish regulations to protect community public water supply wellfields from contamination. In accordance with the Ground Water Protection Act, the Water Pollution Control Board adopted a Wellhead Protection Rule (327 IAC 8-4.1) that took effect on March 28, 1997. This Wellhead Protection Rule requires all community public water supply systems (CPWSS) to submit a Wellhead Protection Plan (WHPP) to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).
Wellhead protection is a way to protect our drinking water by managing the areas around our water supply to prevent contamination. This is done by setting up a zone around the well called a Wellhead Protection Area. Within this area, any spills or leaks of materials that could contaminate the ground water are a concern.
