General Information

Sandbags are available for pickup at the street department located on 2421 17th St. Stop in at the front desk to let the office staff know how many sandbags it is you would like to take

The City offers a Sidewalk Program. It is designed to offer you savings as you repair your sidewalk. For information on the Sidewalk Program, call the Street Department at 293-5518.

By ordinance, open burning is not allowed in the City. Therefore, the City provides a Leaf Removal Program. Rake them to the curb* and the Street Department will pick them up. The program operates in the fall from mid-October to mid-December and again in the spring from mid-April to mid-May. For information, call the Street Department, 293-5518.

*Please do not put leaves or leaf piles in the street.  Leaf piles in the street can cause safety issues and clog our storm drains.* 

So far this season the Street Department has collected 1,058 truckloads of leaves which equals over 15,870 cubic yards.

The Street Department will finish with Zone D (South of river, West of Main St.) this week (12/4/2023).

During the week of Dec. 11th they will go around the entire city.

Beginning the week of December 18th, please call the Street Department for leaf pickup. 574-293-5518

Weather permitting, this will be the city of Elkhart Street department paving/milling schedule from Monday, October 7th through Saturday October 12th. Vehicles should be removed from the street prior to 7am and not return until after 7pm OR until barricades are removed. Sidewalks can be used to and from your home, but street access will be prohibited during the paving process.

10/7 Monday:

  • 1201 South Nappanee St- WWTP Operations Road (off Vermont Ave)

10/9 Wednesday: 

  • East/West alleyways between Beardsley Ave and Maple Row running from Ward St to Beech St

  • Beech St- Beardsley Ave to Maple Row & Maple Row to Laurel St

10/11 Friday:

  • Alleyway behind 1655 Beardsley Ave from Wildwood Ave to West Blvd

10/12 Saturday:

  • Wildwood Ave- Beardsley Ave to West Blvd

The City’s Traffic Division is responsible for the normal daily traffic in the roadway including signage, designating “yellow” no parking, constructing detour routes, handicap parking spaces, intersection improvement, neighborhood traffic concerns, school zone flashers, traffic signal installation & repairs, truck routes.
Signalized Intersections
The Traffic Division maintains 89 signalized intersections throughout the City. If you notice a signal out, please report the failure by calling 522-2884. Traffic Signs The Traffic Division currently maintains a sign asset database of over 10,000 traffic signs that can filter information such as sign code, classification, priority, facing direction, support type, and size. We also have the ability for depreciation projects and work-order record-keeping with full reporting capabilities. Please report any damaged or missing traffic signs by either calling 522-2884.  Please be prepared to give an accurate description of the location of the damaged or missing sign to expedite the repair process.
If you notice a signal out, please report the failure by calling 522-2884.  If this is a public safety issue, please call the Elkhart Police Department immediately at 295-7070.

In Memory of Mike Schoen

Over 20 years ago he helped in paving Winding Waters Lane. Now we have a recreation of the same spot at a different time. Thanks Mike, we’ll take it from here.
