Education
Education is our mission! We love hosting field trips or getting back in the classroom to teach about the environment, sustainability, and so much more! Want to set up a field trip or a classroom visit?
Volunteering
Volunteers are the heart of the EEC! They help with outdoor projects on our trails and assist with programs and events. Want to be a part of the EEC team?

In 2020, the EEC began working with Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute to create a Climate Action and Resilience Plan for the City of Elkhart. The process began with a Greenhouse Gas Inventory, which is available below. The city’s climate action plan is still a draft, and we hope to create a more updated and formalized plan with input from the public in the future.
The EEC has! In 2023, the EEC received a grant that allowed us to install ground- and roof-mounted solar panels as well as a wind turbine. You can see the live updated savings on the monitors in our Visitor’s Cabin.
For more info on what the City of Elkhart is doing in the solar field and what you can do for your own home, click the link below.
The Aquatic Biology program is based out of the Public Works Department, but we are lucky enough to partner with them for several of our events! They do fantastic-year round work sampling the local waterways and monitoring the health of the water and the creatures who live in it. For details on their work, click the link below.
The City of Elkhart has received a grant to plant 2,000 trees in 4 years through our new Trees for the Hart program. For more details about the grant and how you can get a tree or help plant one, click the link below.
